Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),
Our kids are our future. The foods they eat now make a big difference in the people they will grow up to be. A transformation in school menus is fast approaching.
Starting with the 2012-2013 school year, there will be many new changes and requirements in our school meals. The changes will only give more importance to what we are already doing to provide more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and in general healthier meals. At this time, we have made changes to meet these new requirements. For example:
• We serve fresh fruits
• We serve vegetables and will now offer different colors of vegetables
• We serve 1% plain or flavored, fat-free milk, and
• We are also adding baked sweet potato fries instead of just plain French fries
• We are also increasing our use of whole grain breads on our menu
This is just the beginning. We will keep on making changes to meet the new guidelines. These changes will take some time to get used to, but we are working on great ways to get students excited about eating more healthy foods.
We cannot do it alone. We need your help to make this a success. We ask that you encourage your kids to try new foods at home and at school or join them for lunch or breakfast once in a while at school to try the new menu items.
These new requirements will change school meals forever. We hope to have your support in helping our kids grow up to be strong, tall, and healthy people.
